Speaking during the thirty-fourth presentation of the draft resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” the Ethiopian representative stated that such actions must be examined by the international community.
She emphasized that this is particularly important given that these actions disregard the UN Charter and carry humanitarian consequences. Regarding Havana, she noted that this extraterritorial policy jeopardizes the availability of essential services and hinders the Caribbean nation’s participation in international economic affairs.
She stressed that the difficulty in accessing essential supplies affects the provision of basic services and the ability to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and address national priorities; it also restricts the capacity to respond to the adverse effects of climate change.
Regarding the coercive measures applied to Cuba, she noted that this issue directly concerns the international community’s commitment to respecting the UN Charter and fostering constructive international cooperation.
Ethiopia aligned itself with statements made by the African Group, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Group of 77 plus China, all of which emphasize the peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for international law as fundamental principles of the UN Charter.
The representative reiterated the call for the lifting of unjustified restrictions on essential supplies, and urged respect for international law and the UN Charter to support the well-being and sustainable development of the Cuban people.
