Italy’s Susa Valley Mountain Union stands for Cuba

Rome, Oct 26 (Prensa Latina) The Council of the Susa Valley Mountain Union, in Italy, has unanimously approved a motion expressing solidarity with the Cuban people and condemning the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against the island.

The statement, provided to Prensa Latina, notes that the initiative calls on the Italian government and the European Union to promote—in all international forums—actions aimed at the immediate lifting of this policy, which has persisted for more than six decades.

The motion highlights how the consequences of Washington’s policy have worsened over the last two years, negatively impacting access to essential goods, medicines, and fuel, as well as the functioning of transport, agriculture, and hospitals.

The document was approved just over a week after a visit to the Susa Valley by the Cuban Ambassador to Italy, Jorge Luis Cepero Aguilar—a visit organized by the local chapter of the National Italy-Cuba Friendship Association.

During that meeting, a proposal was put forward to establish a partnership agreement between the Susa Valley and a Cuban province, with the goal of strengthening ties of cooperation and solidarity between the two regions.

The motion also includes initiatives to raise awareness about the reality in Cuba, as well as efforts to collect medicines and funds, in coordination with the municipalities that make up the Susa Valley Mountain Union.

The president of the organization, Pacifico Banchieri, emphasized the importance of expressing solidarity in the face of the difficulties Cuba is currently experiencing.

The resolution will be forwarded to the Italian Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, parliamentary groups, and the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Italy.
