Dominican physician, a graduate of ELAM, speaks out for Cuba

Santo Domingo (Prensa Latina) – Dominican physician Mirna Jimenez de la Rosa, a graduate of the first class of the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), has denounced the impact of the U.S. blockade on the health and well-being of the Cuban people, while defending the island’s right to determine its own future.

In statements to Prensa Latina and Cuban television, she expressed the concerns shared by graduates of the institution—located in the Playa municipality of Havana—regarding Washington’s policies, which she stated “directly strike at the quality of life, prosperity, and health of the population.”

De la Rosa challenged the arguments used by the U.S. government to maintain this policy and rejected the notion that Cuba poses a threat to U.S. national security.

She asserted that economic, oil, and energy-related restrictions directly affect the living conditions of the Cuban people and even hinder the solidarity offered by other governments and nations.

“How will we be able to justify, from a historical perspective, this genocidal action that Washington is committing against a dignified nation—a nation whose only ‘sin’ is refusing to kneel before what is being imposed upon it from the outside, and refusing to surrender its right to self-determination in shaping its own future?” she asked.

“Are we to believe that Cuba, with the caliber of its people and their intellectual depth, is incapable of self-governance? It is an act of extreme arrogance and abuse to underestimate the intelligence and capacity of a people who have shown such resilience for so many years,” she remarked.

De la Rosa reaffirmed her support for Havana and defended the right of the Cuban people to chart the country’s course, free from external impositions.

“We will always stand in solidarity with the people of Cuba, and we will always respect whatever decisions they choose to make,” she affirmed.
