“From Ecuador, we tell the world: the Ecuadorian people do indeed stand with Cuba and its Revolution,” stated the CEASC in a declaration released this Wednesday, following the vote by Ecuador—along with 16 other states—against a resolution calling for an end to the siege imposed by Washington on the Caribbean nation.
The solidarity organization asserted that this official stance does not represent the people of this South American nation, and questioned Quito’s departure from a more than three-decade-long tradition of supporting Cuba at the UN regarding the blockade.
“This shameful vote does not represent the Ecuadorian people,” the organization maintained, highlighting the historical ties between the two countries and noting that the government had aligned itself with the United States.
The statement expressed gratitude to the peoples and governments of the 130 nations that maintained their support for Cuba and did not yield to pressure from the White House.
“Their vote is not merely a vote; it is an act of dignity, sovereignty, and historical justice,” the Coordinator stated, describing U.S. economic and diplomatic threats as a campaign of coercion aimed at securing votes and abstentions.
On social media, others also voiced their rejection of the Ecuadorian executive’s position regarding the policy of strangulation directed at the Cuban people—among them, former Deputy Foreign Minister Fernando Yepez Lasso.
“Unacceptable, disgraceful, shameful! Ecuador votes against lifting the criminal United States blockade against Cuba, and the Noboa administration reaffirms its thoughtless alignment with Washington, as well as its contempt for international law and for solidarity with our brothers,” commented Yepez Lasso on the platform X.
