Ethiopia and Russia strengthen partnership

Moscow, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address cooperation in nuclear energy, healthcare, trade, and other multilateral issues of interest.

Ahmed wrote on his social media, “I held a fruitful bilateral meeting with President Vladimir Putin to discuss ways to strengthen the long-standing relations between Ethiopia and Russia. Our discussions covered cooperation in nuclear energy, health, and trade, as well as bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest.”

The Ethiopian prime minister also personally presented Putin with the Russian-language edition of his book, “Medemer” (an Amharic word for Synergy), “reflecting our shared commitment to dialogue, mutual understanding, and the continued advancement of Ethiopia-Russia relations.”

The meeting took place during the Ethiopian head of Government’s visit to Moscow to attend the 3rd Russia-Africa Summit, which brings together Russian and African leaders on October 28–29 to explore ways for cooperation.

Putin, in turn, welcomed the growing partnership between Russia and Ethiopia, highlighting a notable increase in bilateral trade and ongoing cooperation on international and multilateral issues.

Referring to Russia’s relations with Africa, Putin affirmed that Moscow fully supports the continent’s emergence as “one of the key centers of the new multipolar world order.”

Moscow and Addis Ababa keep a consistent relationship through successive Russia-Africa summits. Ethiopia participated in the first edition, held in Sochi in 2019, and in the second in St. Petersburg in 2023.
