According to a statement released this Thursday by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), the operation took place last week with external support.
It resulted in the death of Faisal Yusuf Macalin Cabdule—alias “Abdikarin Horsid”—who served as one of Al-Shabaab’s finance chiefs until 2024 and was a close associate of the Islamist faction’s leadership.
Somalia is plagued by Islamist groups such as Al-Shabaab—an affiliate of Al-Qaeda—which frequently carries out attacks against both military and civilian targets, with the goal of establishing an ultra-conservative Islamic state.
Located in the Horn of Africa, Somalia has also endured years of fragmentation and inter-clan conflict, posing significant challenges for the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections, currently scheduled for April and May 2027.
