The crisis, which has reached a critical point, began in mid-October after the Sejm (Parliament) elected Maciej Berek as a judge, an appointment that Nawrocki, opposed to both the Government and Parliament, refused to take the oath.
On Friday evening, the Tribunal’s website announced the suspension of its president, Bogdan Swięczkowski, and vice-president, Bartlomiej Sochanski, stating that Anna Korwin-Piotrowska would assume leadership of the body.
The institution’s X profile denounced an “illegal takeover” of its website, asserting that Swieczkowski remains president and Korwin-Piotrowska is not recognized as such.
National reports noted that amid ongoing demonstrations, Nawrocki, accompanied by a large security force, entered the building to the cheers of a crowd.
Meanwhile, police struggled to contain the people, and frequent altercations broke out.
Since returning to power in 2023, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who was former president of the European Council, pledged to resolve the internal crisis; instead, the situation appears to be worsening.
