Ambassador highlights Africa’s leading role in Cuba’s identity

Kingston, May 25 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Ambassador to Jamaica Ines Fors Fernandez on Tuesday highlighted the role of Africa in the construction of the identity of the Cuban people, on the Day of that continent.

During a speech at the virtual panel ‘Building African-Caribbean solidarity in Covid-19 times,’ the diplomat also noted the cooperation that her country provided for several decades to African nations.

Currently, thousands of Cuban collaborators are rendering their services in Africa, especially in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Fors Fernandez.

Among the participants in the forum arranged by the PJ Patterson Center for the Promotion of Relations between Africa and the Caribbean were: former Jamaica’s Prime Minister Percival James Patterson; the deputy chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Hilary Beckless; and from the institution itself, the director of the Reparations Research Center, Verene Shepher.

Former Executive Director of the Pan American Health Organization George Alleyne and former Nigeria’s President Olosegun Obasanjo also took part in the event to present the historic, cultural, ethical and experiential ties that unite the Caribbean States with Africa.

The world commemorates Africa’s Day every May 25 for the founding in 1963 of the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union.
