US city calls for lifting of blockade against Cuba

Washington, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) The US city of Baltimore called for a federal action to lift the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, the website of its council reported on Friday. The resolution, adopted by the council of the most populated city of the state of Maryland, calls on Congress and President Joe Biden to immediately end all aspects of this coercive measure.

It includes the lifting of travel restrictions to Cuba for US citizens, and calls on Washington to remove Cuba from the unilateral list of state sponsors of terrorism and to return the Guantanamo Naval Base, illegally occupied by the United States.

In the past few months, several US cities joined the Bridges of Love initiative, whose main objective is to fight these punitive measures that mainly affect Cuban families.

Baltimore’s decision coincides with the denunciation by the online publication The Intercept, which, when advocating a change in Washington’s policy, praised Cuba’s work in the fight against Covid-19, while the US Government keeps the sanctions.

These policies seriously complicate Cuba’s access to international funding, and Cuban leaders claim that they bring about an overwhelming supply shortage, The Intercept reported.

According to the Data for Progress survey, most US citizens think that Washington’s policies on Cuba must change in order to fight the pandemic.
