Syria authorizes IAEA access to alleged nuclear sites

Damascus, Jun 5 (Prensa Latina) The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, affirmed that Syria granted IAEA inspectors access to the alleged nuclear sites.

In statements following his meeting with Syrian transitional President Ahmad Al-Shara, which were published by the Syrian press, Grossi explained that the objective is to shed light on some of the past activities believed to be related to nuclear weapons. He expressed hope that the inspection process will conclude in a few months.

Grossi revealed that President Al-Shara expressed interest in Syria obtaining nuclear energy in the future. “He has shown a very positive attitude in engaging with us and allowing us to carry out the necessary activities,” said the IAEA director.

The official clarified that international inspectors intend to return to the Al-Kubar reactor, located in Syria’s eastern province of Deir Ezzor, as well as to three other relevant sites. “Although there is no evidence of radioactive releases at the sites, the agency is concerned about the possible presence of enriched uranium at some locations and its possible reuse, smuggling, or trafficking,” he added.

In addition to resuming inspections, Grossi stated that “the IAEA is willing to transfer nuclear medicine equipment and assist in the reconstruction of infrastructure for radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, and oncology.”

Syria will likely consider building small nuclear reactors, which are less expensive and easier to install than large conventional reactors, the IAEA director general added.
