Reports of alleged assassination of Syrian President denied

Damascus, June 29 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Ministry of Information denied reports circulating on social media and in some media outlets about an assassination attempt against Syrian transitional President Ahmed Al-Shara.

A source from the Ministry, quoted by the official news agency SANA, denied the situation and described as false the reports that Turkish intelligence had foiled an alleged attack against Al-Shara during his recent visit to the southern province of Deraa.

According to media reports, the assassination attempt was carried out by a cell of the Daesh terrorist group led by a person from Deraa, who was arrested by the Army the day before the visit.

The Franco-Lebanese newspaper L’Orient-Le Jour previously revealed, citing diplomatic sources, that President Al-Shara has been the target of at least two assassination attempts since taking office last December, noting that one of them occurred in March.

According to the newspaper, jihadist groups, including Daesh, are behind these assassination plots, in an attempt to reorganize the Syrian political landscape.

The warnings were not limited to the media.

Earlier, the US ambassador to Türkiye and special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, warned of serious threats against the Syrian president due to his attempts to communicate with various Syrian groups and also to open up to the West.
