Mexico reports 24.5 percent decrease in intentional homicides

Mexico City, July 8 (Prensa Latina) The executive secretary of the National Public Security System, Marcela Figueroa, reported a 24.5 percent reduction in the incidence of intentional homicides during the first nine months of the current administration.

Last June “ended with a monthly average of 65.6 homicides per day. If we compare this average with the one in September 2024 (86.9), there was a 24.5 percent decrease in nine months,” the official emphasized.

Speaking at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s regular meeting with the media, the president noted that this drop means that during the sixth month of 2025 there were 21 fewer crimes of this type per day than last September, one month before the start of the government.

Figueroa also noted that between June 2019 and the same period in 2025, authorities recorded a 34.5 percent drop in the average daily crime rate, highlighting this past month and the first half of the year as the lowest since 2016.

Referring to the states during the sixth month of this year, the official said Sinaloa was in first place, accounting for 10.5 percent of total homicides nationwide, followed by Guanajuato, and then Baja California.

Regarding the first half of the year, she detailed, seven states accounted for almost half of the country’s homicides: Guanajuato, Baja California, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, the State of Mexico, Guerrero, and Michoacan.

According to the report, 25 states decreased their daily homicide average between the first half of 2024 and the same period in 2025: Zacatecas, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, and Tamaulipas.

The administration is implementing a national security strategy based on four lines of action: addressing the causes, consolidating the National Guard, strengthening intelligence and investigation, and coordinating with the states.
