The current events in that city becomes “the most dangerous ones since the war began on October 7, 2023,” said Adnan Abu Hasna, spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)
Speaking to Al Jazeera television, Abu Hasna warned that nearly one million Palestinians “are being pushed into an area of less than 20 square kilometers.”
The UNRWA spokesperson underscored that the people are refusing to leave the city and flee south for many reasons, including a shortage of money and accommodation in the southern region.
The Israeli security cabinet approved in early August a plan presented by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reoccupy the coastal enclave in several phases, the first of which will begin with Gaza City and the surrounding areas, despite international condemnation of the move.
The UN estimates that the ground offensive will push more than 900,000 Palestinians southward, amid strong international criticism of the Netanyahu government.
