This event is dedicated to the master Elsa Nunez, painter, draftsman, and professor, and one of the most influential figures in Dominican contemporary art.
On the occasion, the Minister of Culture, Roberto Angel Salcedo, presented the artist with a plaque recognizing her more than six decades of career, marked by poetic, socially committed work, and a profound aesthetic sensitivity.
Salcedo announced that he will submit to the Executive Branch a draft decree for the formation of a permanent committee for the Biennial, which will ensure greater stability in its organization.
He also announced that the prizes will be increased for the 2027 edition, with the aim of making artist participation more attractive.
For her part, Nunez expressed her emotion at receiving the tribute in the context of the Biennial, which has been a space for searching, ruptures, and rebirths, she said.
She also noted that it honors a path traveled, with its lights and shadows. “Art is a form of resistance, of naming what hurts, what burns,” expressed the artist, who affirmed that her work has been a way of engaging with the country, with its contortions and its wounded beauty.
On the occasion, the Biennial’s Grand Prize was awarded to the work “Healing Ritual” by artist Lucia Mendez Rivas, in addition to nine awards and two honorable mentions.
