Dominicans denounce environmental abuses by multinational corporation

Santo Domingo, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Young people, social leaders, and environment organizations from the Dominican province of Monte Plata participated in the "Ecological Walk for Citizen Awareness" in Managua Hill area of Bayaguana, the newspaper Lucha reported.

The activity was organized by Juventud Caribe, along with community and political groups, with the purpose of denouncing abuses by multinational corporations that affect natural resources and promoting greater social organization in the face of environmental threats.

During the walk, participants agreed to promote the creation of a Coordinating Committee for the Great Mobilization for the Environmental and Social Dignity of Monte Plata as a space for coordinating struggles in defense of the territory.

They rejected the attempts to exploit Loma Managua by the Dominican mining company COMIDOM and its partners in the multinational Barrick Gold.

They demanded an end to the destruction of the Boya River, attributed to the construction of a bus stop ordered by the National Police. They also denounced the installation of an asphalt plant by the REMIX company in the municipal district of Gonzalo.

The event was supported by groups such as Centinelas del Este, as well as community and political leaders. Among the participants were environmentalists and leaders of the Frente Amplio party, according to Lucha, the newspaper of the Communist Labor Party.

The march was dedicated to the memory of environmentalist and community leader Joselyn Ogando. At the end, the organizers reaffirmed that they will continue mobilizing youth in defense of life, water, and the environment.
