Honduran President calls for defending independence with dignity

Tegucigalpa, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) President Xiomara Castro called on her fellow countrymen to defend Honduras's emancipation with dignity and courage, marking the 204th anniversary of this Central American nation's independence from Spanish colonialism.

“The independence of Honduras is defended every day with dignity and courage,” the president wrote on her social media profile, as part of the commemoration of the national holidays, a celebration that this country shares with its neighbors Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.

In her message, she remembered emblematic figures of the national resistance, such as the indigenous leader Lempira, the national hero Francisco Morazán, and the workers who led the historic 1954 strike.

“Like Lempira, like Morazan, and like the workers of the 1954 strike, the people never knelt before anyone, nor will they ever kneel before anyone,” the head of state emphasized, highlighting the fighting spirit and steadfastness of the Honduran people in the face of adversity.

Castro, who will conclude his four-year term in January 2026, marked by profound socioeconomic transformations, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the transformation of Honduras.

“We are resistance, we are change, and we are refounding the homeland,” stated the president, whose administration managed to reduce the high rates of poverty, insecurity, and public-private corruption, in addition to initiating the construction of eight hospitals and dealing severe blows to drug trafficking.

“Let’s point the finger at those who don’t want a homeland and only defend their economic privileges. There is no independence if the true power continues to be exercised by the oligarchy,” former president and leader of the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party, Manuel Zelaya (2006-2009), stated on the same social network.
