Colombian activist: Peace is a strategic pillar of the Left

Havana, Dec. 29 (Prensa Latina) Solidarity among progressive and leftist countries resisting imperialist aggression must become a strategic pillar for their organizations and social movements, asserted Colombian activist Juan Manuel Martinez.

Faced with a declining—and therefore even more dangerous—imperialism, without unity and solidarity, “they can sweep us all away,” he told Prensa Latina in Havana after participating in the commemorative events for the 65th anniversary of the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP).

A representative of the “Camilo Cienfuegos” Solidarity with Cuba Corporation of Medellin, Martinez emphasized the importance of peace, but warned against its “romanticism”: Peace must arise from concrete material and social conditions, not from empty rhetoric, he said.

To achieve it, he added, people must be prepared and capable of defending it, not submissive or dependent on the power of the United States.

The Camilo Cienfuegos Corporation of Solidarity with Cuba is one of the most active organizations in the solidarity movement with the Cuban Revolution in the Andean country and represents a concrete expression of South-South internationalism, rooted in a commitment to sovereignty, social justice, and Latin American integration.

Martinez praised President Gustavo Petro’s stance as “novel and enriching,” given his adoption of a dignified foreign policy toward Washington and his solidarity with causes such as that of Palestine and other peoples in struggle.
