On his X (formerly Twitter) account, Rodriguez reaffirmed his commitment to further strengthening the close ties of friendship and cooperation between the two nations and their governments.
In an interview with the Lesotho Times, Tau described the decision to support Cuba as a “just cause.”
“It is in times like these that true friends are needed and support one another,” the Foreign Minister stated.
Tau noted that Maseru and Havana have maintained relations for decades. Cuba has sent qualified doctors to work in Lesotho, while students from Lesotho have traveled to the Caribbean island to study medicine.
“Cuba has supported us throughout the years. Many of our compatriots studied there, and Cuban doctors have worked in Lesotho, providing much-needed healthcare services,” he added, also recalling the assistance the Caribbean nation provided to Africa in its struggle against colonial oppression.
He further pointed out that 35 students from Lesotho in Cuba are suffering the consequences of the US blockade. Given the “far from encouraging” findings of an assessment conducted by the Office of the High Commissioner (based in Canada) regarding the students’ situation, his government is preparing measures to assist them.
