Indira Pineda, spokesperson for the associations of Cuban residents in Italy, expressed on national television, from the southern city of Naples, that “we want to denounce that our country is being attacked by a very serious blockade, which is stifling our economy.”
Pineda stated that the political pressures and the economic strangulation measures, tightened by the executive orders signed on January 29 and May 1 by US President Donald Trump, “violate the human rights of our people and also violate international law.”
The Cuban sociologist said, in this European country, “thanks to a vast network of solidarity, we have been able to send solar panels, medicine, and food.” This aid “is unfortunately a drop in the ocean,” so increasing international pressure for the United States government to lift that blockade is necessary.
Pineda told Prensa Latina, referring to the massive demonstrations of support for Cuba that spread across the Italian peninsula, that “as Cubans, we join the fight to defend our people and also to denounce a possible military aggression.”
