Indian authorities stated that the discussions, which are expected to continue until June 4, cover potentialities of compromise within the broader framework of the BTA and in areas such as market access, non-tariff measures, customs and trade facilitation, investment promotion, and alignment on economic security.
The press informed that the discussions are led by US Assistant Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch, and Additional Secretary in the Indian Department of Commerce Darpan Jain.
The expected outcome is an advancement of the technical work necessary to transform an existing framework into a legally binding agreement.
India and the United States issued a Joint Declaration on February 7, 2026, agreeing on a framework for an Interim Agreement in which both parties committed to broader negotiations for a BTA.
Such a framework outlines a possible reduction of US tariffs on Indian goods from 50 percent to 18 percent and the elimination of an additional 25 percent tariff linked to purchases of Russian oil by New Delhi.
