The Sao Paulo city event highlighted the enduring relevance of Fidel Castro’s thought, who died on November 25, 2016, and called for strengthening solidarity with the Caribbean island.
Addressing representatives of Brazil’s main student organization and social movements, the diplomat thanked them for the invitation and emphasized the importance of paying tribute to whom he described as one of the most important political figures in Latin America.
“In the centenary year of Fidel’s birth, the best way to pay tribute is to study and interpret his work, and to continue fighting for the poorest and most humble people on earth, for just causes, for freedom, sovereignty, and the right of peoples to choose their own path,” he stated.
Cairo stated that Fidel Castro spoke of a united Latin America and the Caribbean to face common challenges, and denounced the impact of the unilateral measures imposed by the United States, calling for strengthened international solidarity.
In this regard, he urged a shift from declarations of support to concrete actions that contribute to mitigating the effects of the blockade.
He also acknowledged the support provided to the Cuban people by the UNE (National Union of Educators) and various Brazilian organizations, particularly the solidarity campaigns for the acquisition of medicines and solar panels.
