Uruguay: FA accuses opposition of boycotting budget

Montevideo, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) The decision by the opposition Coalicion Republicana (Republican Coalition-CR) to boycott the Uruguayan government's Accountability Report has drawn strong reactions from the Broad Front (Frente Amplio-FA) party.

The National Party (PN), the Colorado Party (PC), and the Independent Party (PI) issued a statement announcing they would not vote for the bill in general.

They stated that they would reserve their opinion for specific details, but their stance raises doubts about the future of the government’s budget proposal, which seeks to prioritize combating child poverty, improving citizen security, and assisting people experiencing homelessness.

In the face of the insistence by journalists on how the particular discussion will be arranged if the general vote were not held, PC Senator Pedro Bordaberry responded: “When that happens, we will make a decision.”

Coalition legislators presented their decision as a settling of scores regarding the government’s performance over the last year, despite several of their members having promised support for measures such as those aimed at benefiting the most vulnerable children.

The Executive Power’s bill, among other goals, seeks to reduce child poverty by 25 percent. jdt/iff/arc/ool
