Iran approves bill to charge fees to ships using Strait of Hormuz

Tehran, Aug 24 (Prensa Latina) The Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee approved an article of a bill that would charge fees to ships using the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for several maritime services.

IRNA reported that the committee continued the analysis of the so-called Strategic Action Plan to Guarantee the Security and Development of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Committee spokesperson Hassan Qashqavi explained that the legislators approved Article 3 of the initiative, the review of which had been postponed in a previous meeting.

He said the provision allows for charging fees for navigation and environmental protection services, refueling in certain cases, insurance, security, and other services related to maritime transit.

Qashqavi noted that the payments would be for ships from countries authorized to transit the strait and could be made in Iranian rials or another currency determined by Tehran.

The parliamentary committee’s approval of the article does not yet make the initiative a law.

The text must subsequently be submitted to the plenary session of the Iranian Parliament for a vote.
