The Havana event served as a forum for dialogue and cooperation to publicize proposals to strengthen local food systems and social protection mechanisms, in acordance with Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty) and 2 (Zero Hunger).

Attendees included representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Labor and Social Security, and Agriculture, as well as representatives from the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty Support Mechanism.

Local media said the initiatives seek to increase local food production, strengthen local food systems, and improve supplies for the social protection network.

Tribuna de La Habana newspaper reported that it aims to improve stable access to food for the most vulnerable segments of the population.

One preliminary plan, entitled “Sustainable and Resilient Local Food Systems for Social Protection and Food Security,” aims to increase local food production sustainably and resiliently, both to substitute imports and to ensure supplies for the social protection network.

The FAO reported 92 million dollars in funding sources and actions across 62 Cuban municipalities between 2019 and 2026, benefiting nearly 426,000 people.
