Featuring a cover designed by 2025 National Award for Fine Arts winner Alejandro “Mono” Gonzalez, the 80-page volume gathers images of Fidel Castro ranging from his childhood and youth to his time in the Sierra Maestra mountains and his meetings with workers and grassroots organizations.
Visual artist and curator Carol Martinez noted that the book, published to mark the Commander-in-Chief’s 100th birthday, also includes posters, as the most powerful expressions of 20th-century Latin American graphic art.
“Fidel Cien Años,” published in partnership with Argentina’s Political Propaganda Archive, was launched during the Illustrated Book Fair held at Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center.
Chilean intellectual and politician Daniel Jadue said at the launch, “We are not looking at a simple collection of portraits. We are looking at a visual archive of the relationship between a leader, a people, a revolution, and a series of struggles that spanned the 20th century.”
Jadue added, “Fidel was a pivotal figure in Cuba’s social transformation, the statement of its sovereignty, and the international projection of its revolution.”
