Senator rejects Peru’s abstention in vote on U.S. blockade

Lima, Oct 30 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian Senator Silvana Robles has rejected her government’s abstention during the vote on a new UN resolution demanding an end to the United States’ economic, commercial, financial, and energy blockade against Cuba.

She added that the Peruvian delegation to the United Nations should have supported the resolution against “a unilateral policy that, for more than six decades, has unjustly punished the Cuban people and denied them access to medicines, food, fuel, and other essential goods.”

She stated that Peru’s abstention “represents a regrettable step backward in our country’s diplomatic tradition—a tradition historically committed to the self-determination of peoples, national sovereignty, and respect for international law.”

Robles further expressed her regret over the abstention, noting that it “comes as no surprise, given that it originates from the Fujimorist regime—the very same regime that has subordinated us to the interests of the United States under the ‘Shield of the Americas.’”

According to the senator, Peru “abandoned a long-standing position of dignity and Latin American solidarity” yesterday, choosing instead to “align itself with the pressures of the empire.”

She reaffirmed her solidarity with the people and government of Cuba, as well as her commitment to a Latin America that is sovereign, united, and free from foreign interference.
