Known as the “Athens of Ecuador,” this southern city, the capital of Azuay province, is developing the “Cuenca te hace bien” (Cuenca Does You Good) program.
Running until December 6, the initiative features 14 concerts, 27 fairs, several exhibitions, festivals, and theater and dance performances.
The feat of granting independence to the capital of Azuay is considered a pivotal chapter in the struggle for emancipation from Spanish rule in South America.
On November 3, 1820, under the leadership of prominent figures such as Abdon Calderon, Juan Jose Flores, and other local leaders, this territory in the Ecuadorian Andes proclaimed its independence from Spain, contributing significantly to the nation’s path toward sovereignty.
The independence movement was consolidated two years later, alongside efforts in other Ecuadorian cities, during the Battle of Pichincha.
