UN reaffirms support for efforts to restore security in Haiti

United Nations, Nov 3 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations (UN) maintains its commitment to supporting efforts to restore security and stability in Haiti as part of a coordinated international response, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated.

In a statement, the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres confirmed receipt of a letter signed by Wilson Joseph—leader of the gang known as “400 Mawozo”—who requested mediation by the multilateral organization following the arrival of Salvadoran military personnel in the country.

Dujarric noted that the receipt of this letter does not imply endorsement of its contents, recognition of its author, or the adoption of any specific position by the UN.

Nevertheless, he reiterated concern regarding the impact of the situation in Haiti on the civilian population, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law and prioritizing the pursuit of peaceful solutions.

The UN is aware of reports concerning the deployment of additional Salvadoran military personnel in Haiti. The vast majority of these troops are not part of the anti-gang force and, therefore, fall outside the scope of the mandate and reporting mechanisms of the United Nations support office, he indicated.

“We reiterate that all security operations—whether conducted within the framework of the force or by national authorities and their partners—must be carried out in full compliance with applicable international standards. Respect for these obligations, as well as transparency and accountability, remain fundamental,” he concluded.
