According to the papal provision published by the Holy See Press Office, His Holiness made that decision after having considered the request from Cardinal Baltazar Porras, Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Caracas (Venezuela), and heard the request from Vincenzo Buonomo, Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University.

Referring to the ‘Venerable Servant of God’ and ‘Faithful Layman’, who was born on October 26, 1864, and died on June 29, 1919, Pope Francis pointed out that Blessed Jose Gregorio Hernandez will be the co-patron of the Studies Cycle alongside Blessed Juan de la Paz, and recalled that his Beatification ceremony will be held on Friday, April 30, in the Archdiocese of Caracas.
