Cybercrimes generate profits for criminals in Panama

Panama, May 21 (Prensa Latina) Cybercrimes in Panama are currently generating over US,000 a day to criminals, Attorney General Javier Caraballo said.

In statements to the press, Caraballo assured this figure is an estimate based on accusations received, for which he acknowledged that criminal organizations´ profits could be higher.

He detailed that people oftentimes do not report such events for fear of being assaulted or for being a bit naive, hence ‘there is a large hidden figure’ with regard to accusations and, on occasions, inmates (from prison) are deeply involved in these crimes, according to probes conducted.

‘Talks are being held with penitentiary authorities to see how this kind of crime incidence can be lowered; however, it is critical to say that this type of crime not only has penitentiary facilities as epicenter, but we have had cases where perpetrators are living abroad,’ Caraballo added.

According to the Prosecutor´s Office, cybercrimes increased 244.7% during the last three years, going from 123 cases in 2016 to 424 in 2020, while 143 investigations have been opened to date in 2021.
