FM underscores humanistic vocation of Cuba’s medical collaboration

Havana, May 23 (Prensa Latina) Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Sunday underscored the humanistic vocation of Cuban medical professionals, on the 58th anniversary of the country's international medical cooperation.

On his official Twitter account, the head of Cuban diplomacy recalled how in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, 57 brigades from the Henry Reeve Contingent of Physicians Specialized in Situations of Disaster and Serious Epidemics saved thousands of lives in 40 countries and territories.

‘Cuba’s collaboration has ennobled the Revolution’s solidarity and internationalism in 58 years,’ Rodriguez tweeted, adding that ‘our physicians represent the humanistic vocation’ of Cuba.

Although Cuba’s support in the medical field for other latitudes dates back to 1960, when a group of physicians left for Chile to assist the victims of an earthquake in the southern city of Valdivia, it was not until 1963 that medical professionals were sent abroad on a permanent basis.

In that regard, Cuba’s first medical mission was sent to Algeria on May 23, 1963.
