Guterres regretted the deaths and damage caused by volcanic activity, near the town of Goma.

The UNSG expressed his concern because this disaster occurs at a time of great humanitarian needs in the region, fueled by insecurity and increased by the Covid-19 pandemic and its health and socioeconomic consequences.

The UN and its humanitarian partners are working to support DRC´s efforts to aid those affected by the Nyiragongo volcano eruption.

The UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) also moves its air assets to oversee the situation and ensure population is aware of recent events.

On Monday, DRC´s authorities confirmed 20 people died after the eruption, while they continue checking human and material damage.
