The initiative was presented on Wednesday by deputies from the opposition and ruling party.

The legislator for the Frente Amplio, which brings together left-wing parties, pointed out that ‘we want to establish that the commercialization in our country of products that are manufactured in militarily and illegally occupied territories is not allowed in accordance with international law.’

The official explained that ‘there are more than 80 Israeli settlements in Palestine that extract natural resources or manufacture products on location, in which soldiers target, detain children and adolescents. We believe that this measure advances the path of peace and we hope that it can be law ‘.

He finally pointed out that the Government of Chile must stop being an accomplice to the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Deputy Sergio Gahona, from the Independent Democratic Union, declared for his part that ‘we cannot stop a war (from Chile), but we can give clear signals that what is happening in Palestinian territory are abhorrent crimes against humanity.’

The United Nations Human Rights Council announced on May 27th the opening of an investigation into ‘possible war crimes’ committed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip during the recent military escalation that hit that territory.

Chile has the largest Palestinian community on the planet outside its country of origin.
