Uruguay’s experts deem vaccination against Covid-19 to prevent deaths

Montevideo, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayan virologist Santiago Mirazo on Sunday deemed that vaccination against Covid-19 will contribute to a downturn in serious cases and deaths in elderly people, without eradicating the disease.

Regarding the known herd immunity, the expert said that it will not be sterilizing and considered it difficult to achieve it in the southern spring, as the authorities estimate, but at the beginning of 2022, taking into account the existing level of mobility, which scientists and doctors insist on reducing.

Mirazo criticized a pilot test carried out by the government last evening with antigenic tests to enter a theatrical performance that ‘in the current context is not the most appropriate with an extreme community circulation,’ he considered.

Meanwhile, he welcomed the decision to vaccinate minors from 12 to 17 years old as of next week, in view of the high mobility of adolescents, which in his opinion ‘is the key for high schools to be able to hold classes in person.’

Uruguay has so far exceeded three million doses of Covid-19 vaccines administered to 54.84 percent of the population, for the first time, and 30 percent with full application.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency System reported 4,228 new Covid-19 cases and 36,660 active cases, as well as 67 deaths, for a cumulative total of 4,583 during the course of the pandemic.
