Strong winds complicate firefighting in Turkey

Ankara, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) The fires on Turkey's south coast continue on Friday, killing eight people and destroying thousands of hectares, as firefighters try to cool the ground to prevent the flames from spreading.

The mayor of Milas, a town in Gurcegiz province, tweeted that the fire that is threatening the local power plant is controlled despite the sudden turn of winds that caused the collapse of several neighboring houses.

According to authorities, 12 blazes remain active there and in Antalya province.

The total of controlled wildfires rose to 185 in 38 provinces, while damages to power lines is reported and authorities predict possible emissions of carbon monoxide.

The intelligence services are investigating the causes of the fires, according to Anatolia news agency.
