Moscow: Turkish military operation in Syria would increase tension

Nursultan, Jun 15 (Prensa Latina) Russia's Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev on Wednesday stated that for Moscow, a new Turkish military operation in northern Syria is an unreasonable step that will increase tension in that country.

Speaking to reporters in Nursultan, the senior Russian official stressed that such an action could lead to the destabilization of the situation, escalation of tension and a new round of armed confrontation in that Arab nation.

Lavrentiev said that Russia will propose to the Ankara representation participating in the Syria talks in Nursultan to avoid taking such a step and solve the problems through talks between the parties. “We are ready to provide all kinds of support about the issue.”

On June 3, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced his intention to carry out a new military operation in northern Syria and include the cities of Tell Rifat and Manbiy in the security zone created along the border in October 2019.

This capital is hosting from this Wednesday until Thursday, June 16, new talks on Syria in the Astana format with the participation of delegations from the guarantor states (Russia, Turkey and Iran), in addition to the Syrian Government and the armed opposition of that Arab nation.
