Chinese city stripped of civilized status after crime

Beijing, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) The Communist Party of China has stripped the northern city of Tangshan of the national list of civilized cities, following a violent beating there to four women that uncovered several criminal incidents, local press reported on Wednesday.

The political organization withdrew the three titles Tangshan received for civilized cities, amid a crackdown on gang activities and the complicity with local officials.

Tangshan is in the public eye following the release of a video of the beating by several men to four women sitting at a barbecue at daybreak June 10. The individuals are members of a gang, who brutally beat women with kicks and even chairs, while dragging them outdoors.

So far, nine suspects have been arrested and five members of the police are under investigation for the incident, which caused great uproar across the country, sparked calls to crack down on criminal gangs and also on the need to increase protection for women.

The Tangshan Government started a campaign that includes increasing patrols, adopting a rapid response system for security threats and stamping out fights, any act of public disorder, intentional attacks and insults to women.
