Postponement of Haitian penal code described as a victory

Port-au-Prince, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) Former Senator Jean Renel Senatus described the postponement of the entry into force of the penal code in Haiti as a victory, and insisted on the need to make corrections to the law before it is implemented.

Senatus, who is also a chairman of the Senate Commission on Justice and Security, assured that the code tarnishes the moral values and human dignity, which is why it should not be implemented.

On Wednesday, the Haitian Government agreed a two-year postponement to implement the law and during that period, a commission must review it and offer conclusions.

The code was approved by presidential decree in 2020 by then President Jovenel Moïse, without the approval of the National Assembly that had been dysfunctional since January of that year after the mandates of all legislators and two thirds of senators expired.

The law has generated controversy since its approval and massive protests, especially from the religious sector, which disagreed with the decriminalization of abortion and the punishment of those who discriminated based on sexual orientation.

The penal code in force in Haiti dates back to 1835, although it has been amended several times in its almost two centuries of existence.
