Attorney’s Office probes mine flooding in Mexico for federal crime

Mexico City, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) Mexico's Attorney General's Office (FGR) began an investigation into possible federal crimes related to the flooding of the coalmine in Sabinas, Coahuila state, in northern Mexico, it was reported on Monday.

Ten miners have been trapped in the flooded shaft since Wednesday, August 3, and it is feared that they have not withstood, as water levels could not drop sufficiently, so that the rescue brigades can enter the site.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was at the site on Sunday giving encouragement to the relatives of the victims and issuing instructions regarding the legal matters to clarify the event.

The Attorney General’s Office stated in a press release that the investigations began on Friday, and the criminal field work, forensic photography, witness interviews, identification of the owner-occupants of the mine or coal shaft, and identification of the affected workers are already carrying out.

It also requested information to different federal and state premises about the different files related to the company that exploits the mine, as well as its owners.

It revealed that the Mexican Institute of Social Security asked it for the report of the workers registered in the mine, and the Ministry of Economy for the documents regarding the concession title of the mine, as well as the name of the individual or legal entity to whom it was granted.
