Colombia and Venezuela reopen borders

frontera-Venezuela-Colombia
Bogota, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) The presidents of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, announced today at the same time the reopening of the borders between their two countries as of September 26.

“As a first step, the air connection and cargo transportation between our countries will be resumed. We confirm the Government’s commitment to reestablish brotherly relations”, the Colombian President said.

On Wednesday, Petro received the new Venezuelan ambassador, Félix Plasencia, as part of the reestablishment of bilateral relations, which he promised during his electoral campaign.

Likewise, yesterday, the Inter-Institutional Unit for the Reactivation of Relations with Venezuela was installed, a coordination mechanism in which all the competent agencies of the Colombian Government participate.

“The Unit was established with the purpose of coordinating the actions of the national agencies for the reopening of the border and the reactivation of relations with Venezuela in a progressive and articulated manner at all levels of the Government”, a press release from the Foreign Ministry pointed out.

The Interinstitutional Unit for the Reactivation of Relations with the neighboring nation will be the coordinating body of national, territorial and bilateral institutions.

In this regard, the participants in its foundation agreed on the importance of facilitating the participation of the border regions in the process.

It was determined that during the first opening phase, sectorial technical tables will be established, led by the entity in charge of each sector, to deal with priority issues and that, within each table, the competent entities will define a road map with actions and specific dates to initiate the bilateral dialogue.
