Moscow, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) The Russian Ministry of Defense on Monday confirmed the deployment of the missile defense Bastion coastal system in Paramushir, another island of the Kuril archipelago.

The Ministry’s information states that the crews of such system of the Pacific Fleet were deployed on Paramushir, located in the northern portion of the archipelago, to carry out continuous surveillance of the coastal waters and straits.

In November 2016, Russia deployed the Bal and Bastion coastal defense systems, equipped with anti-ship missiles with ranges of 120 and 600 kilometers, respectively, on the Kunashir and Iturup islands.

Kunashir and Iturup, along with Shikotan and Habomai, are the four islands of the Kuril archipelago that Tokyo claims from Moscow.

Bastion, equipped with Onyx projectiles (or Yakhont in its export version), provides for guarding the coastline within a radius of 600 kilometers against enemy landing operations.

According to data from the Ministry of Defense, the system consists of 24 rockets, which can be raised to a maximum average of 36 in some modalities.
