Government of Haiti calls for national reconciliation

Port-au-Prince, Jan 1 (Prensa Latina) Haiti's Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, today called for national reconciliation to rebuild the country, on occasion of the 219th anniversary of its independence.

Henry laid a wreath this Sunday at the Haitian National Heritage Museum and recalled that the proclamation of independence by the liberator Jean Jacques Dessalines redefined the history of humanity, since, for the first time, a black people was free.

The head of Government also pointed out the heroic deed of the fathers of the country, as well as the memory of all those who shed their blood to bequeath the current nation.

May the year of grace 2023, the year 219 of our independence, a year dedicated to heritage, see Haitians here and elsewhere reconcile, join hands to build together the foundations on which our young people will build the Haiti of the future, said the headline.

In addition, he said he had faith in the ability of citizens to put aside their differences, egos and individual interests, with the aim of rebuilding the union that was the strength of their ancestors, he assured.

This January 1, Haiti celebrates the 219th anniversary of its independence and of being the first free black country in the world after the revolt that began in 1791. led by the Jamaican Boukman.

The uprising was recognized as the first great revolutionary movement in colonial America, and it would take place in a deeply unequal territory, which had about 570,000 inhabitants, most of them enslaved blacks who lived in precarious conditions.
