Mexico City, Jan 27 (Prensa Latina) Mexico today paid tribute to the Apostle of Cuban Independence, José Martí, at the Cultural Center that bears his name in the Alameda Central that he visited so much during his stay in this country.

In a ceremony in front of his statue, considered the largest full-length outside of Cuba, dozens of Mexicans and Cubans gathered to celebrate the 170th anniversary that will be tomorrow, January 28.

The evening was attended by the Secretary of Culture and Art of the National Directorate of the Morena party, Tomás Pliego, the head of Culture of the City government, Claudia Curiel, and leaders of the Mexican Solidarity Movement and the José Martí Association of Cubans residing in Mexico. The speeches were given by Pliego and Curiel, who exalted the political thought and work of the hero of Cuban independence, recalled that he lived more than two years in Mexico. His best friend, Manuel Mercado, farmed here, wrote part of Our America and left the play “Love with love is paid”.

Both speakers agreed to highlight the coincidences of Martí’s thought with the most contemporary revolutionary milestones in Mexico, and the ideals of the 4th Transformation of the government headed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The closure was in charge of Ambassador Marcos Rodríguez, who, citing his stay in these lands, said that with his thought and guidance, the expedition members of the Granma yacht also set sail from Tuxpan.

He recalled that Martí described this City as the place that “always had hearts of gold, and arms without thorns, where the foreigner shelters without fear.”

Rodríguez thanked, on such a significant date, especially the unforgettable gestures of solidarity expressed towards Cuba by the Mexican people and government, in the face of the accidents and natural disasters we are facing.

As our Commander in Chief said, “we will not bear anything against Mexico, we will feel it as our own. We will know how to be faithful to the friendship that centuries of history and beautiful common principles have forged!

The Cuban diplomat called to remember Martí as we do with Juárez, Morelos, Bolívar and so many other heroes who died so that we could be here today.

Shortly before, a group of Cuban diplomats and residents also paid tribute to Martí in the sculptural complex dedicated to perpetuating the memory of the Master in the Chapultepec forest.
