Both nations established diplomatic relations in 1992. Two years later, a Cooperation agreement was reached for culture, education and science sectors.

In 2019, a Cuban delegation paid an official visit to Moldova in order to check the common willingness to develop political talks and to reaffirm bilateral interests in expanding economic relations and cooperation in sectors of mutual interest.
