Macron and Mélenchon cross swords in tense setting

macron-4-500x311
Paris, Mar 27 (Prensa Latina) President Emmanuel Macron and the leader of La France Insumise (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, exchanged accusations today over the tense prevailing scenario and the episodes of violence framed in the controversy over the reform of retirement age.

During a meeting at the Élysée Palace with close collaborators, the head of state would have attributed to LFI the will to delegitimize the institutions.

People present commented that the president mentioned the existence of a real political project of that opposition force to delegitimize the reasonable order and institutional instruments, including the Constitutional Council, published the BFM TV channel.

The response of the former presidential candidate Mélenchon was not long in coming, and he blamed Macron for the violence in recent days, stating that he is incapable of stopping it and that he is incapable of amplifying it.

“It is he who delegitimizes the democratic authority, by resorting to tools that allow either limiting the debates or speeding them up,” he stressed at a press conference.

The Government activated article 49.3 of the Constitution, which guarantees the adoption of a project without a parliamentary vote, to adopt the retirement reform, which fueled the discomfort already generated by aspects of the initiative such as the extension of the retirement age from 62 to 64 years and the increase in the contribution period.

The protests grew and so did the clashes between demonstrators and police, with mutual accusations of violent acts, which have been recorded in videos and audios.

According to Mélenchon, the head of state represents the operation of an authoritarian regime, before which he called to exercise freedom and to demonstrate tomorrow, in the tenth national day of mobilizations and strikes called by the unions against the retirement reform.

Be millions tomorrow, show that democracy in the country is alive and has a message for the President, he declared.

Earlier, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin exposed to the press that there are individuals who intend to destabilize the institutions and put France under “fire and blood”, a conduct that he has attributed in recent days to “the extreme left”. .

The LFI leader also had an answer for Darmanin, whom he accused of organizing “disorder”, instead of guaranteeing peace and public order.
