A bill in Honduras calls for pardoning prisoners aged 70 and older

Tegucigalpa, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) A bill proposed to the National Congress of Honduras reportedly advocates for pardon to persons deprived of their liberty aged 70 and older.

Manuel Rodríguez, a lawmaker of the Liberty and Refundation (LIBRE) Party, presented the bill to the Legislative Branch, including prisoners with terminal illnesses, Canal 8 reported.

According to Rodríguez, the prisoners sentenced for high-profile or severe crimes and those who have committed crimes such as gangs, contract killings, homicide, large-scale massacres, and drug trafficking are exempted from pardon. The lawmaker stated that the bill instructs the National Penitentiary Institute to execute total pardon to persons aged 70 and older, included in Decree Number 31-2013, article three of the pardon modality number one.

The decree will be immediately implemented and will come into force on the day of its publication in La Gaceta.
