Cuban youths lead Workers’ Day rally

Camagüey, Cuba, May 5 (Prensa Latina) More than 200,000 trade unionists from Cuba's third most populated city celebrated International Workers' Day on Friday, convinced of the idea of a better Cuba, especially for young people.

Despite the political hostility against Cuba, sponsored by the United States, a bloc headed by 1,000 young people led the rally because, according to Jose Garcia, a Master in Electrical Engineering, “it is a priority that youths take the reins in key positions.”

According to the expert from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), founded in 1989 by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, “the desire cannot diminish despite the enormous difficulties, and we cannot ignore that it is a hostile context, but beyond the celebrations we have to know that the task of order now is to work,” he pointed out.

Yissel Morales, a 28-year-old expert in Innovation, Research and Development at the CIGB, who graduated from the University of Camagüey in Chemical Engineering, joined the rally for May 1 with the premise of making Cuba grow to bequeath it more dignified to the children of tomorrow.

“Being here at the square means a lot because I am also close to those people who have given a lot to this country. And they have also forged the idea that today the fight is in every workplace,” she told Prensa Latina.

Agustin Arriba, a member of the secretariat of the Cuban Workers’ Confederation (CTC) in Camagüey, warned that “in these historic times we are leading another mass mobilization. Just a few days ago we showed the vote for all that it was a colossal victory, and it showed that Cuba remains united despite obstacles to break our development plans.”

Cuban, who due to bad weather conditions could not celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1, had to postpone the festivities for May 5, with the same purpose of solidarity with the union movement of all just causes in the world.
