Burkina Faso: 28 people killed by Islamic extremists – AIB

Ouagadougou, May 19 (Prensa Latina) About 28 people, including members of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland forces, were killed after an armed attack by alleged Islamic extremists in the northern Burkina Faso province of Yatenga, the AIB news portal reported.

According to the news portal, which quoted the assailants, allegedly members of the radical Ansarul Islam, after the attack headed for the locality of Barga, where several of them were shot down by military aircraft bombing.

Local media also pointed that the violent actions were conducted two days after members of an unidentified extremist group killed nine civilians in the city of Bilguim Douré, in the east of the country.

The Burkina Faso Government aided in establishing the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland, an armed militia recently created as an auxiliary of the national army to confront radical Islamist elements.

Burkina Faso´s people are currently facing insecure conditions following attacks by armed extremist groups, including Boko Haram, the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims.
