Havana, Jun 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuba on Saturday commemorates the 118th anniversary of the death of the Generalissimo of the Liberation Army Máximo Gómez, a distinguished internationalist fighter who contributed significantly to the fight for Cuban independence in the 19th century.

Máximo Gómez was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1836 and arrived in Cuba in 1864 so as to take part, four years later, to the insurrectionary struggle emerged in Cuba against the Spanish regime.

Gómez served as General during the Ten Years’ War (1868-1878) and General in Chief of the Cuban revolutionary troops in the 1895 War.

Among his numerous combats, the historiography records the battle of Las Guásimas, where Gómez managed to use all-important principles of military strategies.

The battle of Las Guásimas took place from March 15 to 19, 1874, in Camagüey province, where Brigadier Armiñán´s troops, with 3,000 soldiers, confronted the Cuban forces commanded by General Máximo Gómez.

His (Gómez) essential contribution in the course of both liberating deeds, his capacity, courage and total devotion to the revolutionary cause earned him the appointment of Generalissimo of the Liberating Army.
