Values of Slave Route Museum highlighted in Cuba

Matanzas, Cuba, Jun 23 (Prensa Latina) Maintaining the heritage imprint of the fortress, deepening the racial theme and updating the museography are among the values promoted by the Slave Route Museum in the western Cuban province of Matanzas.

According to Museum Director Isabel Hernandez, the former San Severino Castle, a National Monument and now the Slave Route Museum, becomes a space to illustrate aspects of such importance for Cuba and the world linked to race and equal rights.

The Route is working to expand the visits of national and international tourists with the aim of disseminating the history of a site that is an exponent of Renaissance military architecture and keeps important moments of the province and the country in its historic memory, she said.

Hernandez pointed out that the Castle shows traces of the foundational moment of the city of San Carlos and San Severino de Matanzas, so that involving its historic legacy with the current functions of a museum allows for a broader approach to society.

Among the Museum’s current work priorities is to turn the institution into a cultural center that pays tribute to slavery with architectural values and to deepen the patrimonial teaching, she pointed out.

The director said that children’s and senior citizens’ clubs are linked to the center in order to achieve a more interactive institution and preserve the imprint of a place that treasures roots of rebellion and where Cuban patriots such as Fructuoso Rodriguez and Jose Antonio Echeverria were imprisoned for fighting against the oppressive governments at the time.
